Favorite Christmas Toys Over The Years


In February of 2011, Allie Townsend, of Time Magazine, wrote an article that outlined some of the most popular Christmas toys over the decades.  It brought back a lot of memories of the toys I played with as a kid and the ones I've bought for my own kids.  Below, I list some of those that I recall and think you might remember as well.

Interesting Christmas Facts and Traditions - Part 1

Recently it was brought to my attention that Alabama was the first state to declare Christmas a legal holiday way back in 1836.  I never knew that!  Living in Alabama all my life, I thought I would have come across that interesting holiday tidbit earlier than now.  That made me think, "What other interesting facts and traditions about Christmas do I not know?"

Last Gasp 5K Run - December 27th



This may be your last chances to get in one more 5K event before 2014 ends. The Last Gasp 5K will take place on Saturday, December 27th at the Westgate Park Running Trail. Registration begins at 8:00 AM at the Westgate Tennis Center and the race will begin at 9:00.  Registration cost is $10 and no T-shirt is provided. Awards will be given for overall male and female winners, as well as winners in the various age groups.  You can find more information and registration forms at Last Gasp 5K.

Silent Auction for Wiregrass United Way 2-1-1


A silent auction, benefiting Wiregrass United Way 2-1-1, will be held in the community room at Friend Bank in Dothan on December 22nd and 23rd from 2 – 5:30 p.m. each day. 100% of the proceeds will go directly to Wiregrass United Way 2-1-1 to help solve problems and meet the needs of Southeast Alabama by connecting people with resources and services that can make a difference, www.Wiregrass211.com.

 
Some photos taken by David Duke, custom framed by Kidwell’s Custom Framing & Décor, will be available to bid on. David’s brother Tim, will also have some of his photography up for bid to include an antique window repurposed with 8 of his floral photos, you just have to see it. Other items will be available as well to include a gift card to Best Buy, Auburn & Alabama tree toppers, a beautiful room size Oriental rug and more. Highest bidders can take their items with them at 5:30 on the 23rd for those last minute Holiday gifts.
 
We hope you will make plans to drop by the community room at the Dothan Friend Bank on December 22nd or 23rd from 2 to 5:30 p.m. All proceeds stay here in the Wiregrass and help ensure Wiregrass United Way 2-1-1 continues to provide information and referral services 24/7 to residents here in our local communities.

Stroll n Roll or Trot on the Trail This Weekend


This coming weekend gives you two great opportunities to get outside and exercise your legs and lungs. You can get a little mud on the tires at the Dirty Stroll-n-Roll Duathlon, held at the Troy University - Dothan campus.  Start time is 9:00 AM and is a 3.4 mile trail run / 10.8 mile bike ride / 1.7 mile trail run conducted by Dothan Leisure Services, Troy University and Dothan Runners.  Cost is $25 per individual or $40 per team.  Contact Hubie Casey at 334-803-2529.

Next is the Wiregrass Habitrot 5K Elves on the Trail Run.  It begins at 9:00 AM at the Westgate Trail.  You can register at the tennis center or contact Emily Brannon at 334-792-8453 or ebrannon@wiregrasshabitat.org.  Cost is $25 and the entry form can be found at www.wiregrasshabitat.org.

Victorian Christmas at Landmark Park on Dec 14th

Experience the warmth and history of the holiday season with Landmark Park’s Victorian Christmas on December 14 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. This annual open house is Landmark Park's way of saying thank you to the community for its support during the year.

Wreaths, garlands and swags made from native evergreens and
other natural materials will decorate Landmark Park's historic 
buildings. Visitors  will have a chance to make old fashioned
ornaments and decorations to take home or hang on a cedar
tree at the park.  

Horse-drawn wagon rides will also be available. At 2 p.m. the
Christmas message will be delivered by a circuit riding preacher,
Dr. Tim Faulk, in the Headland Presbyterian Church.
Holiday music will take place in the Victorian-style Gazebo
and piano students of the Wiregrass Christian Teacher's Music
Club will perform in the church prior to and after
the service. Santa will also be on hand in the Interpretive Center
Auditorium beginning at 2:30 p.m. to talk with the children
and listen to their Christmas wishes.

Walk Through Bethlehem 2014

   

Mt. Gilead Baptist Church will present their annual Walk Through Bethlehem event December 10th - 14th. Dothan Christmas Tree Lighting - December 2nd

Downtown Dothan will be filled with Christmas joy and children’s voices Tuesday, December 2nd as the City of Dothan hosts its 36th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting at the Dothan Civic Center Parking Lot.
At 6:00 p.m., Mayor Mike Schmitz and members of the Dothan City Commission, along with other special guests, will be on-hand to welcome the beginning of this joyous season. The Montana Magnet School Fifth Grade Chorus, under the direction of Kim Price, will entertain with Christmas carols. Santa Claus will be on-hand for photos and to spread holiday cheer.

Troy Basketball Comes to Dothan on December 11th


The Troy Trojans Men's Basketball team is coming to Dothan!  This is a great opportunity for the Wiregrass area to see the high level of competition played at Troy.  Make plans for the family to come and cheer on the Trojans this holiday season.  Many students will be home for winter break and your voices are needed in the crowd.  The Sound of the South will be here, along with the Troy Cheerleaders and T-Roy!
