  2. Fourth Annual Kindergarten Readiness Workshop Event

The Kindergarten Readiness Workshop Event, an initiative set forth by Houston County Children’s Policy Council in Dothan, Alabama to aid in the goal of increasing the quality of early childhood programs in our area. This is the fourth year for this unique event and all area daycare, preschool, and kindergarten teachers are invited for workshops and networking to help bridge the gap of education in early childhood facilities to readily prepare children for success in kindergarten. .One of the goals of the Houston County Children’s Policy Council is to increase availability of quality childcare programs and thus the idea came about of a kindergarten readiness emphasis. It has taken the collaboration of many agencies and individual efforts to increase awareness in the community on this subject.

The first Kindergarten Readiness Networking event was held on July 23, 2013 for Houston County and Dothan City preschool/day care together with Houston County and Dothan City Schools kindergarten teachers and personnel to better prepare area children for kindergarten and was set up as a discussion panel to start the communication of expectations that public schools have for incoming kindergarteners. The focus of last year’s event as well as this year’s event will be the same but delivery will be done by the structure of workshops. Participants will have a more hands on approach to achieve the common goal of aligning early childhood education experiences with that of what a child needs going into kindergarten.

The event will be held on Saturday, July 23rd, 2016 from 8:30-1:00pm at Jerry Lee Faine Elementary School, registration opens at 8:00. This school in particular is a great model that houses Head Start, First Class Pre K, and Kindergarten classrooms.

  3. Books Balls and Blocks Event with Health Screenings

A free, fun, family event for children ages 0-5 is coming to Dothan on May 19, 2016. The purpose of the event is to screen children for developmental delays in the first 5 years of life.

The event is fun, educational, and exciting! While children engage in games and activities at different stations, parents learn how these interactions help stimulate their child’s development.

In addition to the fun activities we will have health screening (vision screenings, hearing screening, dental screenings) and while the children are playing, parents can complete the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ-3). The ASQ-3 is reliable, valid, and easy to use. The ASQ-3 is the recommended tool to screen young children for developmental delays.

On site, there will be professionals to score the ASQ-3. Afterwards, parents will receive a follow-up from the professional to learn if his or her child’s development 1) appears on schedule, 2) needs to be monitored and provided learning activities, or 3) requires further assessment with a professional.

Parents will be given resources concerning their child’s development and fun activities that they can do with their child! Free community resources will also be available at the event.

For more information and to sign up for the Books, Balls, and Blocks Event, please contact Collins Trott, ctrott@salibacenter.org or 334-792-6255.
